What is your favourite thriller and why?

The responses:

•  “The ‘Bourne’ Trilogy because they’re exciting and keep me on the edge of my seat.”

• “‘Skyfall’ because I like the actors and how they portray the scenery around the film and it’s also good how they mixed all the gadgets from all the James Bond movies and put them into one movie.”

• “My favourite thriller is the ‘Dark Knight’ because it’s got loads of suspense and action and great acting.”

• “It has to be the departed because it’s got a good story and everything is good in it and is perfect in every way. The story is very interesting and keeps you interested the whole time and you don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

From these results I am able to gather the reason why people like the thrillers they have chosen is because the storyline s interesting and keeps them on the edge of their seats. This is typical because one convention of a thriller film is to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. This is shown from three of the four answers. One of the answers said that the scenery of the movie with the actors made the movie interesting. This suggests to me that I should carefully plan my thriller opening to make the scenery and actors look good and of the thriller genre enabling me to have an effective thriller opening.  This information is beneficial because I am now able to incorporate some of the recurring factors people have said make their favourite thriller movie, into my thriller opening.   

What do you look for in a thriller?  

The responses:

• “A good plot, it’s got to have good actors in it, and it’s got to have a good storyline

• “Like it to have all the conventions of a thriller for example car chase, action, main bad guy, warehouses and a good storyline altogether.”

• “Good acting, good storyline.”

• “Interesting story, interesting characters, without an interesting storyline there is no point of a thriller.”

From these results I can see that all of the people thought that a good storyline is what they look for in a thriller movie. Most of the answers also showed that people look for interesting characters and good actors. One of the answers highlighted that all the conventions of thriller movies for example, car chases, bad guys and action are what they look for in a thriller movie. Based on these results it shows me that most people look for an interesting storyline with good actors. These results will help me plan my thriller opening because it shows me specifically what people are looking for in a thriller movie.  From these results I will also be looking to include all of the conventions that make a thriller movie as this is what the public have said they look for.

 Overall from these results from the questions I asked, it shows that the audience are looking for thrillers that keep them guessing and at the edge of their seats. They look for suspense and good acting. The results have also shown me that a good storyline is extremely important because this is what is going to keep the audience guessing. The results have also shown me that including all the main conventions of a thriller movie will also be beneficial.  These results will prove to be vital because I will now consider the factors the public have suggested, which will make an opening that interests the audience giving them a pleasurable viewing experience.
