Opening titles analysis

The walking dead opening Titles

There are various titles shown throughout the opening sequence. The titles shown are of the Film companies, Producers actors and production teams.

The title sequence shows the actors and various people and the jobs they have done to contribute to the making o the film. The typography of the title is white however is covered in dirt. This gives the impression that the title is either old or hasn’t been touched in a long time.  The title has a good contrast with the background. This is because the light text is clearer on a dark background.

The typography of the opening title is bold capital letters that are white but have a dirty/dusty look to them. This may suggest age or, the title has remained untouched for a long period of time. However, this may also suggest the film is about people going form good to bad. This is shown in the white colour being masked by dirt suggesting people or society letting their bad colours show.

The opening sequences uses a mixture of long shots and close ups. The use of long shots in the opening sequence in the opening sequence show desolate places with no people or sign of civilisation. This would give an indication to the audience that  people are hiding from something. The long shot also shows rows of abandoned cars with personal belongings scattered on fields. This shows the audience, people were fleeing from something that could threaten their lives. This coupled with the orchestral music gives the audience a sense of mystery and tension. The orchestral music which is also fairly fast paced further gives the impression of running or fleeing from danger.  This uses a typical convention of a thriller film due to the emotional strain it puts on the audience. The props used also give a good indication of the content of the show; this is achieved through the use of empty gun pellets, arrows and a pocket watch. The empty gun pellets and arrows give a sense of foreshadowing deaths. This is because gun pellets and arrows are weapons that are usually associated with malicious activities and when they are used n the opening sequence is gives the audience a sense of foreshadowing.  During the opening sequence the hands on the pocket watch move fast and don’t tell a particular time. This, to the audience, symbolises a loss of time and an never ending problem, this further adds to the thrilling part of the show.

The opening sequence shows the company that produces the show followed by the actors , in order of importance to the film followed by the executive producers and  the cast. This has been done to give the more important actors the  most recognition while the executive producers aren’t as important.

The mise en scene shows the genre of the tv show by giving trying to give the audience clues and hints to what's excpected in the show. The mise en scene of the opening credits give connotations of death and mystery , this is shown in gravestones and abandoned cars and buildings.  The aprtly covered low angled shot of the abandodned building gives the impression of a person hiding or trying to stay away from something. This is one of the conventions of a thriller genre suggesting the mise ens scene gives the audience the impression of the genre of  The Walking Dead.

  1. The analysis of opening titles is detailed and relevant but there is work missing on production companies and idents. Please ensure that all work is posted to blog related to research into the genre. To further improve, look into the sub genre that you want to replicate in your own production (analyse openings, look at mise ene scene etc). Show that you fully understand the genre and sub genres as appropriate.
