Question 2 essay

. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The media product that I have created represents the socio-economic class B/C/C2/D and E. These range from middle class professionals to unemployed students. This is because the film targets anyone who’s interested in thriller films that are based heavily on the detective sub genre. The film is primarily targeted to people who enjoy films that make you think throughout the film.   The film also questions people’s morals and tries to put the audience into a detective’s position.  The detective is the most important person in the opening and the audience will be trying to figure out the enigma or puzzle with the protagonist.

The lead of our thriller opening is a detective that wears the conventional attire of a detective in a thriller film as see in the thriller film ‘Sin City’.  This is seen through the coat and tie they both wear. However, the detective in the thriller we produced follows the conventions of an old fashioned detective which is shown through the hat that is also part of the conventional attire for a detective. The thriller we produced is also in the same style as the detective thriller ‘sin city’. This is because the conventional dressing. Detectives are stereotypically always male because the job of a detective is seen as an occupation for men. This is the reason why we have chosen a man for the detective. The detective is the protagonist and is Caucasian which is usually seen in most detective thrillers and the detective in our thriller resembles that of the detective in the thriller ‘Sin City’. The characters clothing is the stereotypical clothing for a detective, as seen in ‘Sin City’ and ‘Se7en’. The way the detective has dressed in the thriller we produced is the stereotypical way a detective should dress. We have also chosen to dress the detective this way because in all thrillers the clothing of the protagonist suggests his personality and role.

We decided to make him dress smartly because it has connotations of intelligence and maturity.  This is because of the way they are dressed. The audience can also see the characters personality through they’re clothing. For Example in the thriller ‘Inception’ the audience are able to tell characters are well organised and professional from the suits they wear. This is what we were trying to achieve in the opening by dressing the detective in professional smart clothing as it connotes his professionalism.  The high angled shots that are used throughout the opening on the detective create a sense of authority and power. This reassures the audience that the detective will be able to solve the mystery.  The high angled shots also suggest his authority for the organisation he works for.  This is useful especially in the location he travels to. As the detective is on his own it suggests to the audience he will overcome the tough situation. The high angled shots under the bridge suggest he is just as powerful as his surroundings and suggest he isn’t scared of the situation he is in.

The other character involved in the opening isn’t exactly the same as any detective in an actual thriller. The dead detective in the thriller we produced is similar to the detective in the thriller film ‘se7en’. This is due to the clothing they both wear. Both detectives wear the same clothing of a coat, shirt and tie. This is one of the conventions of a thriller film that involves espionage. However, they are different because the detective in the film ‘se7en’ has a larger role, he is one of the leading detectives and it is shown during the film. The detective in the thriller we produced doesn’t have a big role and is part of the thriller for a small amount of time. They are also different because the detective in the thriller we produced is dead whereas the detective in the film ‘se7en’ has a large role and doesn’t die.  By showing a close up of the dead detective we were trying to create a sense of surprise and anxiety among the

audience as shown in the opening in ‘Se7en’.  We also wanted to get the audience to see the relationship between the lead detective and the dead detective and we achieved this by showing a close up of his dead face.roThe lighting at this part of the opening is darker. This gives the connotations of death and sadness which highlights a significant moment in the thriller as it shows the detective’s partner dead.
