Due to the research I obtained through the audience research, I was able to create an opening that would appeal to my target audience. I was able to obtain this by looking at actual thriller openings and taking inspiration from them. I look at thrillers such as the Walking Dead, Pulp Fiction and Se7en. These are all established successful thrillers and I’ve taken inspiration from all of their opening sequences to ensure my production fits the thriller genre and appeals to my target audience.

From the Walking Dead I have taken
inspiration by from the mise en scene of their opening titles. In the Walking
Dead opening titles they have included the setting of the programme which
relates to the programme showing the audience what to expect, enticing the
audience. For example, the grave stones
and empty streets and abandoned cars would raise questions among the audience,
giving them an incentive to watch the show. We have also taken the soundtrack
into consideration. As we saw that the sound track to the walking dead gives
connotations of fear and running, it gives a suggestion to the audience what
might happen during the show. When making our opening titles we took into
consideration what the connotations of our soundtrack were, making sure we had
a soundtrack that had the right connotations for the movie, while also adding
to a feel of tension within the audience. We also took inspiration from the Walking Dead
by placing the name of the film at the end of our credits. This is because we
thought it would be a good idea to have the last title the audience saw was the
title of the film.
We took the order of the title from
Pulp fiction. We made sure the most
important people came first. We began with
the director however, in the Pulp Fiction opening credits the director is the
third title. We decided to include the production company last because we
wanted the last title the audience saw was the production company. However,
apart from this we made sure that most of the important opening titles were
placed in order of importance. For
example the directors then the three starring actors, then screen writers. We
replicated this order by having the director first, then having the starring
actors then the main jobs such as the producers, co-producers and head
cinematographer.
We took from Se7en the idea of the
mise en scene and its effect of the audience. The use of dangerous weapons and
quick flashes of pictures to unsettle the audience to create tension was what
we tried to implement in our thriller opening.
The continuous flashing throughout the opening to create an old footage
effect, while disorientating the audience, is how we tried to build tension for
the audience. Also the close up shot of a dead person to unsettle the audience
was also another method we replicated from the opening of Se7en. We also took
into consideration the soundtrack from the opening of se7en. The heavy base and
low eerie uncomfortable sounds that were included added to the tension of the opening.
This coupled with the imagery of dangerous weaponry created tension
